Autism TA

Are you passionate about helping children with SEND and Autism achieve their full potential?

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join a nurturing school in Whitehaven as an Autism Teaching Assistant. This role is ideal for someone with experience supporting children with Autism and complex needs, who is passionate about providing consistent, personalised care and helping pupils feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

About the School

We are partnering closely with a school in Whitehaven that currently offers a range of opportunities for Autism TA’s. The school is deeply committed to providing high-quality, individualized support for children with SEND, ensuring that every pupil is given the tools and encouragement they need to succeed. It fosters a positive, inclusive and engaging learning environment where flexibility and creativity are central to the approach. Staff take great pride in celebrating every step of progress, no matter how small, recognizing that each achievement contributes to a child’s overall development.

As an Autism TA, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 or small-group support for pupils with Autism and complex needs
  • Support children with communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation and social interaction
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and external professionals
  • Implement individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies
  • Create a calm, structured and nurturing environment that promotes learning and independence

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with children with Autism and/or complex needs (school, SEN, care or support settings)
  • Demonstrates patience, empathy and resilience
  • Understands or is willing to learn about sensory needs, routines, and behaviour support
  • Can build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Is committed to safeguarding and inclusive practice

Relevant qualifications or training in Autism, SEN or child support are desirable but not essential – experience and passion matter most.
