Autism Teaching Assistant

We are currently looking for a Autism Teaching Assistant to support a pupil with Autism. This is an exciting new position to work in a specialist unit with pupil’s with additional needs. You will be supporting the pupil 1:1 and also participating in class sessions.

School hours are 8:30 – 3:30 so we invite people to apply who are able to work these hours. We are looking for people who have experience of working with young people or adults with Autism. You will be supporting the class teacher in delivering tailored lessons to the pupils’ specific learning needs. The lessons are dynamic and creative. You will be expected to be flexible and understanding of Autism.

The ideal candidate

• Will have a patient and kind with a caring approach
• An understanding of Autism on a personal or professional level, they may have a qualification in Autism awareness but this is not a must.
• Will have great communication skills to be able to communicate effectively with a large staffing team.
• Must be consistent and professional for a classroom environment.
• May have a childcare, social care or TA qualification but not a must.

The role

• The role is to support the teacher and a pupil 1:1 in class sessions and also in 1:1 sessions.
• Support the pupil with positive behaviour management
• Use other communication methods when needed such as pictures and Makaton
• Apply a creative approach to learning and thinking out of the box to engage the pupil
• Filling out learning journals to report the pupils progress in the day
• Ensuring they create a learning environment that is safe and nurturing

As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis.
