October: Sensory Awareness and ADHD Awareness

October: Sensory Awareness and ADHD Awareness

October is an important month in the SEND calendar, as it marks both Sensory Awareness Month and ADHD Awareness Month. These awareness campaigns highlight the diverse needs of pupils and remind us of the importance of creating inclusive learning environments where every child can thrive.

Sensory Awareness Month

For some children and young people, everyday experiences such as bright lights, background noise, crowded corridors, or even the texture of clothing can feel overwhelming. This isn’t about preference, it’s about sensory processing.

Sensory Awareness Month shines a light on these challenges and encourages schools to make small but meaningful adjustments. Providing quiet spaces, using sensory tools, and being mindful of classroom environments can transform how a pupil engages with learning and feels in school.

ADHD Awareness Month

ADHD Awareness Month invites us to look beyond misconceptions and better understand what ADHD really means. ADHD isn’t simply about being distracted or “full of energy.” It affects attention, organisation, emotional regulation, and impulse control.

In school, this might mean a pupil benefits from movement breaks, step-by-step instructions, or flexible ways to show their learning. With the right support, pupils with ADHD can thrive, bringing creativity, focus, and determination into the classroom.

Our Focus This Month

At Sense Education, we believe awareness is the starting point, but action is what makes the difference. Throughout October, we’ll be sharing practical insights and strategies to help staff support pupils with sensory needs and ADHD.

Together, we can build classrooms where every child feels understood, included, and empowered to succeed.
